Ré

The Columbia Encyclopedia, 6th ed. | 2011 | Copyright

Ré , island (1991 pop. 13,973), 33 sq mi (85 sq km), Charente-Maritime dept., off La Rochelle, W France, in the Bay of Biscay. The island is largely agricultural; it has oyster beds, some fishing, and a salt-extraction industry. There is also tourism. In the late 1970s a 2.1 mi (3.4 km) bridge was completed connecting the island with the mainland. The citadel, built (1681) by Vauban at Saint-Martin-de-Ré, is now a penitentiary. The name was formerly sometimes spelled Rhé.

re. The 2nd degree of the major scale, according to the system of vocal syllables derived from Guido d'Arezzo (see hexachord), and so used (spelt ray) in tonic sol-fa (also in that system the 4th degree of the minor scale; see tonic sol-fa). In many countries the name has become attached (on ‘fixed-doh’ principles) to the note D, in whatever key this may occur.

A term of frequent use in designating judicial proceedings, in which there is only one party. Thus, "Re Vivian" signifies "In the matter of Vivian," or "in Vivian's Case."
