Raoul
Raoul , d. 936, duke of Burgundy, king of France (923–36). Elected king to succeed his father-in-law, Robert I , Raoul fought the Normans and the Hungarians, who repeatedly invaded France. He also defended his crown against those nobles who supported the claims of the deposed Carolingian king, Charles III . The royal authority, lessened in part by objections to Raoul's taking the throne, remained weak under his Carolingian successor, Louis IV . |
