Proverbs, book of
Proverbs, book of A collection of pithy sayings and moral advice for the instruction of the young, traditionally ascribed to Solomon, the archetypal wise man, and certainly chs. 10–31 seem to have been compiled before the Exile, though in its final form, with chs. 1–9, the book dates from the post-exilic period. It is written in poetic form—that is, with regular patterns and vivid images—and emanates from a fairly established group in society such as the royal court, anxious to maintain stability and tradition, though much advice is addressed to quite humble families and local communities. These teachers of the Wisdom School were sometimes in conflict with the more radical proclamations of the prophets (Jer. 9: 23); they were from the same school as Ben Sirach and the author of Job and were intellectuals but not in the Greek tradition of speculative philosophers; Hebrew wisdom was exemplified in practical skills, knowledge about how best to manage one's life and about the purpose of life. Hence ‘wisdom’ came to be personified as an attribute of God (Prov. 8: 22) and eventually the concept was available to the Church as it struggled with its Christology (Col. 2: 3).

Proverbs
Proverbs book of the Bible. It is a collection of sayings, many of them moral maxims, in no special order. The teaching is of a practical nature; it does not dwell on the salvation-historical traditions of Israel, but is individual and universal based on the observation of nature. There are eight divisions, some having traditional ascriptions, including three to Solomon, one to Agur (unknown), and one to King Lemuel. The book is an early example of wisdom literature (see Wisdom of Solomon ), where wisdom is often personified. The dating of the final shape of Proverbs is post-exilic. Although tradition attributes Proverbs to Solomon, the book is probably a collection of various origins dating from the 9th to the 2d cent. BC Proverbs does insist that the fear of Yahweh is the beginning of knowledge, thus placing the instruction within the framework of faith.

Proverbs, Book of
Proverbs, Book of. This poetical OT Book is divided into eight clearly defined sections, three of which are attributed to Solomon. The Book represents a compilation of various collections of proverbs, stemming from widely different periods and places, while the separate collections contain individual sayings of even more diverse origin. While some of these may go back to Solomon, the tradition that he compiled the Book is probably best explained by the fact that he was known to have uttered proverbs and to have made his court a centre of Eastern wisdom (1 Kgs. 4: 29–34).

Proverbs
Proverbs Book of the Old Testament, probably the oldest existing example of Hebrew wisdom literature. The book's subtitle attributes its authorship to King Solomon, but in fact scholars consider that it contains material from various periods later than Solomon's time.
