Praia
Praia , city (1990 pop. 61,644), capital of Cape Verde, on the south shore of Santiago island, c.415 mi (668 km) W of Dakar, Senegal. It is Cape Verde's largest city, as well as a commercial center and a port that ships coffee, sugarcane, and tropical fruit. Praia also has a fishing industry. Resort beaches are nearby, and an airport is just west of the city. |

Praia Capital of Cape Verde, a port on the s shore of São Tiago Island. It is a key point in the Atlantic telegraph cable network. A trading centre for the Cape Verde islands, Praia exports castor oil, sugar cane, oranges, and coffee. Industries: fishing, straw hats. Pop. (2000) 94,757.
