Po
Po , Latin Padus, longest river of Italy, c.405 mi (650 km) long, rising in the Cottian Alps of Piedmont, NW Italy. It winds generally east in a wide valley, past Turin, Pavia, Piacenza, Cremona, and Ferrara, to enter the Adriatic Sea through several mouths. Its marshy delta is constantly expanding eastward. The Dora Baltea, Tanaro, Ticino, Adda, and Oglio rivers are its chief tributaries; hydroelectricity is produced there. The Po River is navigable for small craft c.300 mi (480 km) upstream, but seasonal variations in flow hamper navigation. It is extensively used for irrigation. The Po valley is densely populated and is the most important industrial and agricultural region of Italy. Grains, sugar beets, livestock, and fruits are raised. Turin, Asti, Milan, Brescia, and Verona are the chief cities of the Po valley. |

Po
Po, Italy Padus Italy's most important river has a name that is of uncertain origin. The Ligurian name was Bodincus from a possible Indo‐European root bhedh from which comes the Latin fundus ‘bottom’; the overall meaning therefore was ‘bottomless’. Padus was probably a Celtic name meaning ‘pines’, a reference to the forests surrounding the delta.

Pʾo
Pʾo. Component in Chinese anthropology, one of two spiritual elements in the human (the other being hun). Pʾo is associated with the dark and passive side, i.e. yin; and at death, the pʾo returns to the earth. With the pʾo is associated the kuei, which represents the unsettled and vengeful element of pʾo in some circumstances of death: for details see SHEN.

Po
Po Italy's longest river, in n Italy. It rises in the Cottian Alps near the French border, and flows e to empty into the Adriatic Sea. The Po valley is an important industrial and agricultural region, and water from the river is used extensively in irrigation schemes. Length: 650km (405mi).
