antimony (symbol Sb) Toxic semimetallic element of group V of the periodic table. Stibnite (a sulphide) is its commonest ore. It is used in some alloys, particularly in hardening lead for batteries and type metal, and in semiconductors. The element has two allotropes: a silvery white metallic and an amorphous grey form. Properties: at.no. 51; r.a.m. 121.75; r.d. 6.68; m.p. 630.5°C (1166.9°F); b.p. 1750°C (3182°F); most common isotope Sb121 (57.25%).
