Pedro de la Gasca

Pedro de la Gasca , c.1485-1567?, Spanish colonial administrator. A priest as well as a lawyer, he was selected by Charles V to end the anarchy prevailing in Peru. He arrived in 1547 after the death of the viceroy Blasco Núñez Vela. Tactful, judicious, but unyielding, he wisely offered pardon to all and repealed the New Laws of Bartolomé de Las Casas before mustering his forces and entering the field against Gonzalo Pizarro , whom he defeated in 1548 and ordered executed. He restored some semblance of order to Peru, but his methods were always strictly expedient. After his return to Spain in 1550 he was made bishop of Siguenza and Palencia.

Roldán, Pedro (b Seville, 14 Jan. 1624; d Seville, Aug. 1699). Spanish Baroque sculptor. He trained in Granada but worked mainly in Seville, where he became the leading sculptor of his period. His work was often polychromed by Valdés Leal, as for example with his group of the Entombment (1670–2), which forms the centrepiece of the high altar of the church of the Hospital de la Caridad, Seville. Roldán's daughter and pupil Luisa (1650–c.1704) was also a sculptor, principally active in Cadiz and Madrid. She was the only woman to hold the position of royal sculptor, to Charles II (see Habsburg). Roldán's grandson Pedro Duque Cornejo succeeded him as Seville's foremost sculptor.
