Peak District
Peak District Derbys. Pecsætna lond 7th cent., Pec 1086. OE *pēac ‘a peak, a pointed hill’, once applied to some particular hill but used of a larger area from early times. The first form means ‘land of the peak dwellers’, with OE sǣte + land. The medieval hunting forest here is referred to from the 13th cent. (e.g. foresta de Pecco 1223), this in turn giving name to the village of Peak Forest Derbys. (Peake Forest 1577).

Peak District
Peak District or The Peak, dissected plateau, c.30 mi (50 km) long and 22 mi (35 km) wide, Derbyshire, central England, forming the southern extremity of the Pennines. Kinderscout (2,088 ft/636 m) is the highest peak. Dovedale and Wyedale are the region's major valleys. Peak District has many caves including Peak Cavern and Speedwell. Peak District National Park (c.500 sq mi/1,295 sq km) was established in 1951. |

Peak District
Peak District a limestone plateau in Derbyshire, at the southern end of the Pennines, rising to 636 m (2,088 ft) at Kinder Scout. A large part of the area was designated a national park in 1951.
