Pátmos

Pátmos , island (1991 pop. 2,663), c.13 sq mi (34 sq km), SE Greece, in the Aegean Sea; one of the Dodecanese , near Turkey. On the island, according to Rev. 1.9, the exiled St. John the Divine wrote the Book of Revelation. The Monastery of St. John, founded there in the 11th cent. to commemorate his exile, holds a valuable manuscript collection.

Patmos a Greek island in the Aegean Sea, one of the Dodecanese group. It is believed that St John was living there in exile (from ad 95) when he had the visions described in Revelation.
