Palembang

Palembang, Sumatra/Indonesia Svarna Dvīpa The original Srivajayan name meant ‘Golden Island’ from svarna ‘gold’ and dvīpa while the present one means ‘Place to pan for Gold’ from pa ‘place’ and limbang ‘pan for gold’. Lying astride the Musi River, an alternative theory is that the name comes from pa ‘place’ and lembang ‘lowland’. It was the capital of the Buddhist Srivajayan Empire, a great maritime empire which spread well beyond Sumatra between the 7th and 14th centuries; in the 15th century it became an Islamic sultanate until this was abolished by the Dutch in 1825.
