paean a song of praise or thanksgiving. Recorded from the late 16th century, the word comes via Latin from Greek paian ‘hymn of thanksgiving to Apollo’ (evoked by the name Paian, originally the Homeric name for the physician of the gods).

Paean , Paean was an epithet for Apollo, the healer. The paean, a hymn of praise to Apollo and often to other gods, was sung as a prayer for safety or deliverance at battles and other important occasions. |

paean, a song of thanksgiving for deliverance from evil or danger, addressed usually to Apollo who, as god of healing, was given the name Paean. Later the word is used for a shout or song of triumph.
