Pacific Ocean
Pacific Ocean largest and deepest ocean, c.70,000,000 sq mi (181,300,000 sq km), occupying about one third of the earth's surface; named by the explorer Ferdinand Magellan ; the southern part is also known as the South Sea.

Pacific Ocean Sea of the South The largest of the world's oceans, it was named by Ferdinand Magellan†. Having endured a rough and stormy passage through the Strait of Magellan, he appreciated the ocean's calm and quiet waters as he crossed it in 1520–1 in search of a new westward route to the Spice Islands (the Moluccas).
