Open Shop

OPEN SHOP

A business in which union and nonunion workers are employed. A business in which union membershipis not a condition of securing or maintaining employment.

The term open shop is frequently used to imply that the operator of this type of shop is, in effect, exercising discrimination against trade unions and hampering their advancement through the employment of nonunion employees.

open shop A method of running a computing facility such that the design, development, writing, and testing of computer programs is carried out by the problem originator and not by specialist computing staff. Open shop operation is the operation of a computing system by the writer or user of a program and not by specialist computer operators. Compare closed shop.
