Nobusuke Kishi , 1896-1987, Japanese statesman; older brother of Eisaku Sato . The son of a minor official, he went to live with prosperous relatives and took their name. After attending the law college of Tokyo Univ., he entered government service in 1920, rising to high office in the ministry of commerce and industry. After 1935 he played a key role in the industrial development of Manchukuo . During World War II he was minister of commerce and industry in Hideki Tojo's cabinet; he was imprisoned for three years after the war. As secretary-general of the postwar Democratic party, he was instrumental in uniting all conservative factions into the powerful Liberal Democratic party (1955). He became party president and prime minister in 1957, but widespread public agitation over the new United States-Japan Security Treaty forced Kishi to resign from both posts in 1960. He was succeeded by Hayato Ikeda.

Kishi Nobusuke (1896–1987) Japanese statesman. A member of TOJO HIDEKI's government, he was increasingly opposed to Japan's policies later in World War II. Imprisoned in 1945, he was released without trial. Elected to the Japanese House of Representatives (1953), he emerged as leader of the LIBERAL DEMOCRATIC PARTY, becoming Prime Minister in 1957. In foreign affairs he aimed to ease tensions with neighbouring Asian countries, while encouraging the US-Japanese link. His domestic policy was conservative, especially in education and over law and order. He resigned in 1960, following a riot within the Japanese Diet building, allegedly over his revised JAPAN-UNITED STATES SECURITY TREATY.

Kishi Nobusuke (b. 13 Nov. 1896, d. 7 Aug. 1987). Prime Minister of Japan 1957–60 One of the more imposing individuals to occupy the premiership in postwar Japan, his government did much to heighten domestic tensions through its attempts to renegotiate the Japan-United States Security Treaty. A graduate of Tokyo University, Kishi entered the civil service, and was responsible for industrial policy in Manchukuo. In 1941 he joined the Cabinet of Tôjô Hideki, but was increasingly opposed to his policies as the war continued. Imprisoned in 1945 on suspicion of being a war criminal, he was released without trial and pursued a career as a Diet politician in 1953. In Hatoyama's newly formed Liberal Democratic Party, Kishi provided essential fund-raising services as party secretary-general thanks to his unrivalled contacts with Japanese big business. Kishi's attainment of the premiership was largely the result of the unexpected deaths of more senior politicians, Shigemitsu Mamoru and Ogata Taketora, which cleared the way for his appointment. His prime objective was the renegotiation of the Japan-US Security Treaty. The attention that was given to this issue, particularly in the latter stages of the premiership, resulted in a huge public demonstration of opposition in the streets of Tokyo and brawling in the Diet. Taking responsibility for the chaos that had surrounded the ratification of the treaty, Kishi resigned.
