Nagpur , city (1991 pop. 1,664,006), Maharashtra state, central India, on the Nag River. Formerly the capital of Central Provinces and Berar and then of Madyha Pradesh state, it is an industrial, commercial, and transportation center. It has expanded to include the neighboring town of Kamptee. Manufactures include textiles, transport equipment, and ferromanganese products. Founded in the 18th cent. as the capital of the Nagpur Maratha kingdom, it passed in 1853 to the British.

Nagpur City in Maharashtra state, w central India. Founded in the 18th century as the capital of the Kingdom of Nagpur, it became the capital of Berar state (from 1903) and of Madhya Pradesh state (1947–56). Industries: metal goods, transport equipment, cigarettes, textiles, pottery, glass, leather, pharmaceuticals, brassware. Pop. (2001) 2,051,320.
