McKinley, Mount

McKinley, Mount, Alaska/USA Densmore Peak Named in 1889 after Frank Densmore, a prospector, it was renamed in 1896 by William A. Dickey in honour of William McKinley (1843–1901), who was shortly to become the US President (1897–1901). Its original Aleut name was Denali ‘The High One’ and before the Russians sold Alaska to the USA in 1867 they called it Bolshaya Gora ‘Great Mountain’. The McKinley River in Alaska is also named after William McKinley.

McKinley, Mount

McKinley, Mount Peak in s central Alaska state, USA, in the Alaska Range, and the highest peak in North America. Permanent snowfields cover more than half the mountain. Wildlife is abundant on the lower slopes, in particular the caribou and white Alaskan mountain sheep. It is included in Mount McKinley National Park (since 1980 known by the Aleutian name of Denali). Height: 6194m (20,321ft).

Mount McKinley

Mount McKinley peak, 20,320 ft (6,194 m) high, S central Alaska, in the Alaska Range; highest point in North America. Permanent snowfields cover more than half the mountain and feed numerous glaciers. Known locally as Denali [ "the Great One" ], Mt. McKinley was first scaled successfully by the American explorer Hudson Stuck in 1913. It is included in Denali National Park and Preserve .
