Mordecai

Mordecai

Mordecai A Jewish hero in the story of Esther, which illustrates the reversal of fortunes. His execution for lack of respect to Haman, favourite in the court of the Persian king Ahasuerus, was authorized by the king, along with extermination of Jews throughout the empire. Mordecai was to be hanged; gallows were erected. But the Jewish queen Esther intervened; records existed to show the king that Mordecai had once saved him from an intended assassination (Esther 2: 22). Thus informed, the king revoked the execution order served on Mordecai and instead Haman was hanged on the same gallows. Although fictitious, it is possible that the story may be based on some historical incident. It is celebrated by the minor Jewish feast of Purim.

Mordecai

Mordecai ♂ Biblical name, borne by Esther's cousin and foster-father, who secured her introduction to King Ahasuerus (Esther 2–9). The name is of Persian origin and seems to have meant ‘devotee of the god Marduk’. It had some currency among English Puritans in the 17th century and Nonconformists in the 18th and 19th centuries, but has always been, and still is, mainly Jewish.

Pet forms: Yiddish: Motke, Motl.
