Monaghan
Monaghan County in Ulster province, ne Republic of Ireland, on the boundary with Northern Ireland; the county town is Monaghan. The s and e are hilly, but the rest of the county is a fertile plain. The Blackwater and the Finn are the chief rivers. It is primarily an agricultural county and the main crops are potatoes, oats, and flax. Beef and dairy cattle are raised. Industries: linen-milling, footwear, furniture. Area: 1290sq km (498sq mi). Pop. (1996) 51,313.
