Maynooth, pardon of

The Oxford Companion to Irish History | 2007 | © The Oxford Companion to Irish History 2007, originally published by Oxford University Press 2007. (Hide copyright information) Copyright

Maynooth, pardon of. During the Kildare rebellion, the constable of the besieged castle of Maynooth, Christopher Paris, agreed to its betrayal for money. When the castle was overrun on 23 March 1535, the lord deputy, Sir William Skeffington, executed Paris and 25 other prisoners, as an example to other rebels. By reneging on the deal with Paris, Skeffington made ‘the pardon of Maynooth’ an ironic term for every subsequent breach of trust.
