Mato Grosso
Mato Grosso State in w central Brazil, bordered s by Mato Grosso do Sul, and w and sw by Bolivia; the capital is Cuiabà. First settled in the early 18th century by miners seeking gold and diamonds, it became a state in 1889. Much of the area lies on the central plateau of Brazil, but there is rainforest in the n and marshland in the sw. The w has good grazing land and cattle rearing is the chief occupation. Rice, maize, and sugar-cane are grown. There are extensive mineral deposits but most of them remain unexploited. Area: 881,000sq km (340,156sq mi). Pop. (2000) 2,498,150.

Mato Grosso, Brazil A state meaning ‘Great Forest’ from the Portuguese mato ‘forest’ or ‘brushwood’ and grosso ‘dense’ or, here, ‘great’. Another state is called Mato Grosso do Sul ‘Great Forest of the South’.
