Maseru
Maseru, Lesotho Founded in 1869, after the British declared Basutoland a protectorate, from a group of Basuto settlements as a British administrative post on the top of Griffith Hill just to the west of Thaba Bosiu ‘Mountain of the Night’ from the Sesotho thaba ‘mountain’, the mountain capital of Moshoeshoe I (c.1786–1870), the first paramount chief of the Sotho nation. Maseru is a Sesotho word, the plural of leseru ‘red sandstone’, a reference to the hill. It was the capital of Basutoland in 1884–1966 and of independent Lesotho from 1966.
