Mario

Mario , 1810-83, stage name of Giovanni Matteo, Cavaliere di Candia, Italian tenor. An officer of the Piedmontese guard, he went to Paris in 1836 and studied at the Paris Conservatory, making his debut (1838) at the Paris Opera in Robert le Diable. He sang with great success in Paris, London, and St. Petersburg, appearing often with his wife, Giulia Grisi. Mario had a very beautiful voice, which, united with personal grace and charm, made him the idol of his public. He retired in 1867.

Mario, Giovanni (Matteo) ( Cavaliere de Candia) (b Cagliari, 1810; d Rome, 1883). It. tenor. Army career took him to Paris, 1836, where he was persuaded to become opera singer because of exceptional beauty of v. Début Paris Opéra 1838, title-role in Robert le Diable. It. Opera in Paris, 1840. London début, Her Majesty's, 1839, singing there until 1846. CG 1847–71. With Giulia Grisi, his lifelong companion after 1839, Tamburini, and Lablache sang in f.p. of Don Pasquale, Paris 1843, creating Ernesto. Sang Duke in f. London p. of Rigoletto, 1853. Handsome in appearance and fine actor. Retired 1871.
