Horne, Marilyn (Bernice) (b Bradford, Penn., 1934). Amer. mezzo-soprano. Dubbed singing v. (for Dorothy Dandridge) in film of Carmen Jones, 1954. Opera début as Hata in The Bartered Bride, Los Angeles 1954. Member of Gelsenkirchen opera co. 1956–60. Débuts: Salzburg Fest. 1957; S. Francisco 1960; NY 1961; CG 1965; La Scala 1969; NY Met 1970. Appeared in series of 19th cent. bel canto operas in partnership with Joan Sutherland, beginning in NY in Beatrice di Tenda (1961) and incl. Semiramide and Les Huguenots. Last Rossini role CG 1993 (Isabella in L'italiana in Algeri). Repertory from Handel to Wagner.

Marilyn Horne

Marilyn Horne 1934–, American mezzo-soprano, b. Bradford, Pa. She established herself with her characterization of Marie in Alban Berg's Wozzeck at the San Francisco Opera in 1960. In 1970 she made her debut at the Metropolitan Opera singing Adalgisa in Bellini's Norma. Horne is noted for the power and smoothness ( "seamlessness" ) of her voice, evident in the ease with which she glides from one register to another. Among her notable roles have been Eboli in Verdi's Don Carlos, Arsace in Rossini's Semiramide, and the title role in Bizet's Carmen.

Horne, Marilyn (1934– ) US mezzo-soprano. She studied with Lotte Lehmann and made her debut in The Bartered Bride, Los Angeles (1954). Horne's career included a cycle of Rossini and Bellini operas with Joan Sutherland.
