Maria Jeritza

Maria Jeritza , 1887-1982, Austrian-American soprano. b. Brünn (now Brno). After her debut as Elsa in Lohengrin at Olmütz (now Olomouc) in 1910, she was a member (1912-35) of the Vienna State Opera. She created the title role in the opera Ariadne by Richard Strauss. Jeritza sang (1921-32) at the Metropolitan Opera, New York City, where her Tosca was renowned.

Jeritza, Maria [ Jedlitzka, Mizzi] (b Brno, 1887; d Orange, NJ, 1982). Moravian-born Amer. soprano (Amer. cit. 1943). Opera début as Elsa in Lohengrin at Olmütz, 1910. Engaged 1912 for Vienna Volksoper. Created role of Ariadne in both versions of Ariadne auf Naxos, Stuttgart 1912 and Vienna 1916. After Emperor Franz Josef heard her sing in Bad Ischl in 1912, became member of Vienna Court (State) Opera 1913–32, 1949–52, creating role of the Empress in Die Frau ohne Schatten (1919) and singing first Vienna Jenůfa (1918) and first Vienna Marietta in Die tote Stadt (1920). NY Met 1921–32, where she was first Amer. Jenůfa, Turandot, and Helen (Die ägyptische Helena). CG 1925–6. Last Met appearance as Roselinda in Die Fledermaus 1951. Of striking personal beauty and acting ability.
