Loren Corey Eiseley

Loren Corey Eiseley , 1907-77, American anthropologist, b. Lincoln, Nebr. He taught anthropology at the Univ. of Kansas (1937-44), was chair of sociology and anthropology at Oberlin College (1944-47), and was professor and chair of the anthropology department at the Univ. of Pennsylvania (1947-59). He was named Benjamin Franklin and University Professor of Anthropology and History of Science in 1961. A specialist in early peoples of the Americas, he achieved fame as a naturalist and humanist writer. His works include All the Strange Hours (1975).

Eiseley, Loren [Corey] (1907–77), professor of anthropology at the University of Pennsylvania, whose scholarly writings include The Immense Journey (1957), a history of life on the planet earth; Darwin's Century (1960); and Francis Bacon and the Modern Dilemma (1963), revised as The Man Who Saw Through Mirrors (1973). He also wrote The Unexpected Universe (1969), reflections on life; poetry including Notes of an Alchemist (1972) and Another Kind of Autumn (1977); and an autobiography, All the Strange Hours (1975).
