Lomé

Lomé , city (1998 est. pop. 700,000), capital of Togo, on the Gulf of Guinea. It is the country's administrative, communications, and industrial center, and the chief port, handling such items as coffee, cocoa, copra, and palm nuts. In 1978, the city's oil refinery began production. Railroads connect the city with Togo's agricultural interior and with Benin. Lomé was a small village until 1897, when it became the capital of the German colony of Togo. The Univ. of Benin (1970; formerly the Institute of Higher Studies of Benin) is there. Togo's main airport is outside Lomé.

Lomé

Lomé Capital and largest city of the Republic of Togo, w Africa, on the Gulf of Guinea. Made capital of German Togoland in 1897, it later became an important commercial centre. It was the site of two conferences (1975, 1979) that produced a trade agreement (known as the Lomé Convention) between Europe and 46 African, Caribbean, and Pacific states. Its main exports are coffee, cocoa, palm nuts, copra and phosphates. Pop. (2002 est.) 658,100.

Lomé

Lomé, Togo ‘Little Market’. Founded in 1880 by local merchants who chose the site just outside the new border of the British Gold Coast (now Ghana) to avoid paying British tax on imported goods. It became the capital of German Togoland in 1897 and of French Togo in 1918; it is now the national capital.
