Leopold Damrosch

Leopold Damrosch 1832-85, German conductor. After taking a degree in medicine, he became (1857) first violinist in the ducal orchestra at Weimar, where he was a friend of Liszt and Wagner. In 1871 he came to New York City, where he founded the Oratorio Society in 1873 and the New York Symphony Society in 1878, conducting both until his death. He introduced (1884) German opera at the Metropolitan, New York City, and led American premières of works by Brahms and Wagner.

Damrosch, Leopold (b Posen, 1832; d NY, 1885). Ger. conductor, composer, and violinist. Violinist in Weimar court orch. under Liszt 1855–9, cond. Breslau PO 1859–60. Dir., Breslau Orchestverein 1862–71. Went to NY 1871 and played increasingly important role in US mus. life. Co-founder and first cond. NY Oratorio Soc. (1873) and NY Sym. Soc. (1878). Organized and cond. Ger. opera season at NY Met 1884–5 which incl. f. complete US p. of Die Walküre.
