The Columbia Encyclopedia, Sixth Edition
Lakeland resort city (1990 pop. 70,576), Polk co., central Fla., in the highland region; inc. 1885. It is an important processing and shipping center for a citrus-fruit and phosphate-mining region and is a retail trade center that serves a large area. The Florida Citrus Commission, other state citrus organizations, and the Florida Phosphate Council have their headquarters in Lakeland, which is a popular winter resort and recreation center.
