Lake Turkana

Lake Turkana c.2,500 sq mi (6,475 sq km), NW Kenya and SW Ethiopia, E Africa, in the Great Rift Valley; alt. 1,230 ft (375 m). Surrounded by desolate, volcanic mountains, the 170-mi- (274-km-) long lake is the focus of interior drainage and has no outlet; it is becoming increasingly saline. It was formerly known as Lake Rudolf.

Rudolf, Lake, Ethiopia‐Kenya Also called Lake Turkana in Kenya after the local Turkana people. In 1888 the Hungarian Count Samuel Teleki and the Austrian Lieutenant Ludwig von Höhnel visited the lake and named it after Archduke Rudolf (1858–89), Habsburg Crown Prince of Austria, who committed suicide at Mayerling with his mistress the following year.
