Lake Albert

Lake Albert or Albert Nyanza , 2,064 sq mi (5,346 sq km), on the Congo (Kinshasa)–Uganda border, E central Africa. The lake is c.100 mi (160 km) long and c.19 mi (30 km) wide, with a maximum depth of 168 ft (51 m). Lying in the Great Rift Valley , 2,030 ft (619 m) above sea level, Lake Albert receives the Semliki River and the Victoria Nile and is drained by the Albert Nile, which becomes the Bahr-el-Jebel when it enters South Sudan. Under Mobutu Sese Seko, the official name of the lake in Zaïre (now Congo) was Lake Mobutu Sese Seko.

Albert, Lake, Democratic Republic of the Congo‐Uganda Luta N'zige, Lake Mobutu Sese Seko The first European to see the lake, in 1864, was the British explorer, Samuel (later Sir Samuel) Baker, who named it after Prince Albert (1819–61), the husband of Queen Victoria^†. It was renamed in 1973 after himself by Mobutu Sese Seko, president of what was then Zaire (1965–97), but this name was never generally accepted. It is also known as Albert Nyanza, a Bantu word for ‘lake’.

Albert, Lake Lake on the border between Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda, in the Rift Valley of e central Africa. Albert is fed by the River Semliki and the Victoria Nile and drained by the Albert Nile (Bahr el-Jebel). Ugandans call it Lake Nyanza and the Zaïrians named it Lake Mobuto Sese Seko. Length: 160km (100mi). Average width: 35km (22mi). Max. depth: 51m (168ft). Area: 5350sq km (2050sq mi).
