Kuala Lumpur
Kuala Lumpur, Kuala Lumpur/Malaysia ‘Mouth of the Muddy River’ or ‘Muddy Confluence’ from kuala ‘mouth’ or ‘the place where a tributary joins a larger river’ and lumpur ‘mud’. Following the discovery of tin ore in Perak State, the chief of Selangor State sent a team of Chinese prospectors to search for tin in a huge swamp in this area. In 1857 they landed at the confluence of the small Kelang and Gombak Rivers and built a settlement on the muddy banks. A rich deposit was found in the present suburb of Ampang. The city became the capital of the Federated Malay States in 1895, of the independent Federation of Malaya in 1957, and of Malaysia in 1963. See Putrajaya.
