Krasnoyarsk

Krasnoyarsk , city (1989 pop. 913,000), capital of Krasnoyarsk Territory, W Siberian Russia, on the Yenisei River. A major river port and rail center, it has industries producing heavy equipment for the Trans-Siberian RR, building and mining equipment, and farm and shipbuilding machinery. There are also plants producing chemicals, aluminum, wood products, and synthetic rubber. There is a large hydroelectric plant on the Yenisei at Krasnoyarsk. Founded in 1628 as the Cossack outpost of Krasny Yar, it grew rapidly after the discovery of gold and the construction of the Trans-Siberian RR (late 19th cent.). Krasnoyarsk is the seat of the Siberian Institute of Forestry.

Krasnoyarsk, Russia Krasniy Yar A province and a city founded in 1628 as a fort on the left bank of the River Yenisey. The name means ‘Red Bank’ from krasnyy and yar ‘steep bank’ because of the reddish soil on the river banks. Although obsolete now, krasnyy at one time meant ‘beautiful’ and this could have been the original meaning. Several towns are still called Krasniy Yar.

Krasnoyarsk City and port on the w bank of the upper Yenisei River, w Siberian Russia; capital of Krasnoyarsk Kray. Founded in 1628 by the Cossacks, it was attacked in the late 17th century by Tatars and other tribes. It underwent rapid development after the discovery of gold in the area. Industries: shipbuilding, heavy machinery, electrical goods, cement, timber, flour milling. Pop. (2000 est.) 870,000.
