Krasnodar

Krasnodar , city (1989 pop. 621,000), capital of Krasnodar Territory, SE European Russia, on the Kuban River. A river port and railroad junction, it has petroleum refineries and machinery, metalworking, textile, chemical, and food-processing plants. Founded in 1794 by Zaporozhe (Black Sea) Cossacks upon orders from Catherine II, it was organized as their administrative center and called Ekaterinodar (Yekaterinodar). It served as a military center protecting Russia's Caucasian frontier. After 1918 it was the capital of the Kuban-Black Sea Soviet Republic and was renamed in 1920.

Krasnodar, Russia Yekaterinodar A territory and a city founded c.1793 as a Cossack military post and named ‘Catherine's Gift’ from dar ‘gift’ in honour of Empress Catherine II the Great. She gave the land to the Cossacks. After capture by the Red Army in 1920 during the Civil War the name was changed to a more revolutionary ‘Gift of the Reds’ from krasnyy.

Krasnodar City and port on the e bank of the River Kuban, sw European Russia; capital of Krasnodar Kray. Founded in 1794 by Catherine II as a frontier outpost, it was known as Yekaterinodar until 1920. Industries: oil refining, machine tools, textiles, metalworking. Pop. (2000 est.) 639,000.
