Kowloon

Kowloon Peninsula on the se coast of China, part of Hong Kong. One of the most densely populated areas of the world, it was ceded to Britain by China in 1860. Industries: shipbuilding. Area: 9sq km (3.5sq mi). Pop. (2001) 2,023,979.

Kowloon (Jiulong), Hong Kong/China ‘Nine Dragons’ from jiŭ ‘nine’ and lóng ‘dragon’, a reference to the nine hills in the vicinity. Kowloon is the Cantonese for Jiulong.
