Kitchener city (1991 pop. 168,282), Regional Municipality of Waterloo, S Ont., Canada, in the Grand River valley. Settled largely by Mennonites from Pennsylvania in 1806, it was known as Berlin until 1916, when it was renamed in memory of Lord Kitchener. Its products include packaged meats, metal and leather goods, spirits, appliances, furniture, and rubber products. Because of the close socioeconomic ties between Kitchener and the city of Waterloo , the area is commonly known as Kitchener-Waterloo. Woodside National Historic Park commemorates the birthplace of W. L. MacKenzie King.

Kitchener, Australia, Canada Canada (Ontario): settled as Sand Hill by Dutch immigrants in 1805. Two years later the German Mennonite Bishop Benjamin Eby founded the city which was renamed after him. This was changed to Berlin in 1824. Anti‐German feeling during the First World War caused the city to be renamed after Horatio Kitchener (1850–1916), 1st Earl Kitchener, British field marshal and secretary of state for war (1914–16), in 1916 after he drowned when the ship taking him to Russia struck a mine and sank.
