Kirkcaldy

Kirkcaldy , town (1991 pop. 46,356) and district, Fife, E Scotland, on the Firth of Forth. Industries textiles and furniture manufacture and light electrical engineering. Its port engages in coastal trade. Several Flemish-style structures from the later Middle Ages rest near Kirkcaldy Harbor. The district comprises seven villages, including Dysart, strung along the shore, giving rise to the name "Lang Toun." Adam Smith was born in Kirkcaldy.

Kirkcaldy, Canada, UK UK (Scotland): formerly Kircalethyn. The name embraces the word ‘fort’ twice. Kirk comes from the Celtic caer and caledin, the name of a hill from caled ‘hard’, that is, rocky, and din ‘fort’.

Kirkcaldy Fife. Kircalethyn 12th cent. ‘Fort at Caledin’. Welsh caer. Caledin means ‘hard hill’ (Welsh caled + din). Kirk- was substituted for the ‘fort’ element when this was no longer understood.
