Katowice
Katowice, Poland Kattowitz, Stalinogród The town became Polish in 1922 as a result of a plebiscite in German Upper Silesia when many communes voted to join Poland. The name is derived from a Slavonic root word kot ‘cat’. It was renamed Stalinogród ‘Stalin's† Town’ two days after his death on 5 March 1953; it retained this name until the overthrow of the Stalinist regime in Poland in 1956.

Katowice
Katowice , Ger. Kattowitz, city (1993 est. pop. 366,200), capital of Śląskie prov., S Poland. One of the chief mining and industrial centers of Poland, it has industries producing heavy machinery and chemicals; mines in the region yield coal, iron, zinc, and lead. The city was chartered in 1865 and passed from Germany to Poland in 1921. Katowice is also an important educational and cultural center. |

Katowice
Katowice City in s Poland. Founded in the 16th century and chartered in 1865, it was occupied by Germany during World War II. A leading industrial centre, it produces coal, iron and steel, heavy machinery and chemicals. Pop. (1999) 345,934.
