Kaifeng

Kaifeng, Henan/China Daliang, Bianzhou, Bianjing, Nanjing, Beijing Founded at least as early as the 4th century bc as Daliang. At the end of the 5th century ad the name was changed to Bianzhou when it became a prefecture. The Northern Song dynasty (960–1127) made it their capital. In 1127 it was captured by the Juchen (Jin) (1115–1234), who came from Manchuria in the north; they renamed it Bianjing and then Nanjing ‘Southern Capital’. When the Ming dynasty (1368–1644) came to power in 1368 they called the city Beijing ‘Northern Capital’. However, in 1378 they abandoned the idea of developing the city as an imperial capital. Its name is a contraction of a four character phrase, kāi ‘to open’, tuo fēng ‘to close’ or ‘seal’, and jing, together a reference to a policy of territorial expansion to seal off the borders to ‘barbarians’.
