K2
K2, China‐Pakistan Godwin‐Austen In the Karakoram Range, K2 is the second highest mountain in the world. The K stands for Karakoram and the 2 signifies that it was the second peak in this range to be observed by Lieutenant Colonel Henry Godwin‐Austen by theodolite from hills in Kashmir. The name ‘Godwin‐Austen’ was proposed in 1888 by General J. T. Walker, a former surveyor‐general of India, after Godwin‐Austen (1834–1923), a British explorer and geologist, who first surveyed the mountain in 1856 and explored its slopes and the glaciers at its base. The government of India demurred on the grounds that it was not appropriate for Himalayan peaks to be given personal names. Thus K2 is the official name, although it has been corrupted locally to Kechu or Cheku. Nevertheless, the mountain has been known as Godwin‐Austen at times.

K2 or Mount Godwin-Austen, peak, 28,250 ft (8,611 m) high, in the Karakorum range, N Kashmir, on the China-Pakistan border; second highest peak in the world. It was discovered and measured by the Survey of India in 1856, and first named for English topographer Henry Godwin-Austen , who explored and surveyed the region. "K2" is taken from the first letter of Karakorum, and the number indicates that it was the second peak in the range to be measured. An Italian team led by Ardito Desio reached the summit in 1954. |
