John Gadsby Chapman

Wilson, John C(hapman)

Wilson, John C[hapman] (1899–1961), producer and director. Born in New Jersey and educated at Yale, he spent many years as a stockbroker before his friendship with Noel Coward led him into the theatre. With Coward, the Lunts, and the Theatre Guild, he co‐produced a number of works, including Design for Living (1933) and Tonight at 8:30 (1936), sometimes as a silent partner. Embarking on his own, Wilson later produced such shows as Blithe Spirit (1941), Lovers and Friends (1943), Bloomer Girl (1944), O Mistress Mine (1946), Present Laughter (1946), and The Winslow Boy (1947). He directed many of his own productions as well as those of other producers, notably Kiss Me, Kate (1948) and Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1949).

Chapman, John

Chapman, John (1774–1847), Massachusettsborn orchardist, known as “ Johnny Appleseed” because of the fruit trees he planted for frontier settlers in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois. Many legends and tall tales were told of his remarkable woodcraft and his adventures in aiding pioneers. He is the subject of a ballad by W.H. Venable and of many poems by Vachel Lindsay, including “In Praise of Johnny Appleseed.”

John Gadsby Chapman

John Gadsby Chapman 1808–90, American painter, b. Alexandria, Va. Chapman is noted for his colored etchings of the Roman compagna and the American landscape. His historical painting The Baptism of Pocahontas is in the Capitol in Washington, D.C.
