Johannes de Sacrobosco

Johannes de Sacrobosco , or John of Hollywood, c.1200-1256, English mathematician and astronomer. He wrote several widely read and influential books: Algorismus, a study of arithmetic; a treatise on the calendar; and the most popular medieval introductory textbook on astronomy, the Tractatus de sphaera.

Muris, Johannes de [ Murs, Jehan des] (b Lisieux diocese, c.1300; d c.1350). Fr. music theorist. Wrote treatise Musica speculativa at Sorbonne, Paris, 1323, and 4 other treatises, incl. one on counterpoint. Opposed the innovations of the ars nova.

Bosboom, Johannes

Bosboom, Johannes (1817–91). Dutch painter, a member of the Hague School. He specialized in paintings of church interiors and was much inspired by the work of Emanuel de Witte—in many of his pictures the figures even wear 17th-century costumes.
