Joel
Joel ♂ Biblical name, composed of two different Hebrew elements, Yah(weh) and El, both of which mean ‘God’ the implication of the name is that the Hebrew God, Yahweh, is the only true god. This is a common name in the Bible, being borne by, among others, one of King David's ‘mighty men’ (1 Chronicles 11:38), and a minor prophet who lived in the 8th century bc. The name has been perennially popular as a Jewish name; it was also taken up by the Puritans and other Christian fundamentalists. The name has long been in regular use in North America but was uncommon in Britain until the 1990s. Well-known bearers of the name include the American singer and entertainer Joel Grey (b. 1932), the West Indian cricketer Joel Garner (b. 1952), and the American film director Joel Coen (b. 1954). The French form Joël is also used in the English-speaking world.

Joel, book of
Joel, book of One of the Minor Prophets, of uncertain date, but since the Second Temple was standing (Joel 1: 14; 2: 17) it may have been written in the 5/4th cent. BCE. The country had been ravaged by a plague of locusts which devoured everything in sight, even though they themselves were edible (Lev. 11: 21–2; Mark 1: 6). The prophet regards the disaster as foreshadowing the day of the Lord (Joel 2: 2) of which Amos (5: 18) and Isaiah (13: 6) had spoken. Joel summons the people to lament and suggests that God will then respond with an outpouring of his prophetic spirit ‘on all mankind’ (2: 28–29), for which Moses had prayed (Num. 11: 29) and which the Church later believed to be in principle fulfilled on the day of Pentecost (Acts 2: 17). Israel's enemies will be destroyed in the valley of Jehoshaphat (Joel 3: 1–14).

Joel
Joel prophetic book of the Bible. It is a collection of the oracles of an otherwise unknown prophet, dated variously from the 9th to the 3d cent. BC, though a date in c.400 BC is likely. A locust plague gives the prophet the prextext for summoning the whole nation to repentance; the people, on repentance, will be rewarded with present as well as future blessings, this being a prophecy concerning the Day of the Lord—a day on which the faithful will be vindicated while the Gentile enemies of the people of God will be overthrown. Joel, Book of. Minor Prophet. The first section of the Book (1: 1–2: 17) tells of a plague of locusts, and against this background depicts the approaching Day of the Lord with its call to repentance; the rest foretells the future outpouring of the Spirit on all flesh, the final salvation of Judah, and the destruction of foreign nations.
