Jehu
Jehu King of Israel, 842–815 BCE. After the death of Ahab, he was encouraged by Elisha to stage a coup in which Ahab's widow Jezebel was killed. She had supported the Baal cult and incurred the wrath of Elijah. Jehu also slaughtered the worshippers of Baal (2 Kgs. 10: 25), but in spite of this zeal for Yahweh he continued to maintain the sanctuaries of Bethel and Dan which were rival attractions to Jerusalem. Jehu's atrocities are condemned by the prophet Hosea (1: 4).
