Jean-Pierre Rampal

Rampal, Jean-Pierre (Louis) (b Marseilles, 1922; d 2000). Fr. flautist. Solo flautist Vichy Opera 1946–50 and at Paris Opéra 1956–62 and in Orchestre de l'Association des Instruments à Vent. Founded French Wind Quintet 1945 and Paris Baroque Ens. 1953. Toured worldwide after 1945 as soloist in recitals and with orch. Salzburg Fest. début 1957. Prof. of fl. Paris Cons. 1969–82. Gave f.ps. of several contemp. concs. Ed. of much early fl. mus. Author of Ancient Music for the Flute (1958), autobiography 1989.
