Java man
Java man The human fossilized bones found at Trinil on the Solo River in Java. Originally classified as Pithecanthropus erectus (‘erect ape-man’), these remains are now included within the species Homo erectus. Their date is uncertain but is probably 750,000–500,000 years ago. Subsequent finds of hominids, probably also Homo erectus, in Java were made at Sangiran and Modjokerto. Some of these may be rather older (up to 1.3 million years ago) than the Trinil remains.
