Isabelline
Isabelline or Isabellino style.
1. Style of late-Gothic architecture in the Spain of Ferdinand and Isabella (1474–1516), contemporary with the Manueline style of Portugal, and characterized by a love of ornament. A good example is San Juan de los Reyes, Toledo (from 1477) by Juan Guas. It was essentially a fusion of Netherlandish forms with the Mujédar style of Castile, and was particularly associated with Toledo, Burgos, Palencia, and Valledolid (where Italian Renaissance elements first began to penetrate). The term Hispano-Flemish style is preferred to avoid confusion with (2). 2. Style prevalent in Spain and Latin America during the reign of Isabella II (1830–68). Bibliography Jane Turner (1996) |
