Humberside
Humberside was a new county established by the Local Government Act of 1972. It was built around the county boroughs of Hull and Grimsby, with a substantial hinterland taken from the East Riding of Yorkshire, from parts of Lindsey in Lincolnshire, and Goole, previously part of the West Riding. There was much opposition to the change, particularly from people in north Lincolnshire, who voted by more than 2 : 1 against the proposal. The Humber bridge, intended to knit the two parts together, was opened in 1981. The administrative centre was Beverley. Humberside was abolished in 1996.
