Elliot, Archibald

Elliot, Archibald (1760–1823). Scots architect. With his brother, James (1770–1810), he formed one of the leading Edinburgh practices of the early C19. He designed the Regent Bridge (1815–19) in the Greek Revival style, but his country-houses were usually castellated with Gothic detail (e.g. Taymouth Castle, Perthshire (1806–10)). His Grecian Forbes mausoleum, Callendar House, Stirlingshire (1816), is a distinguished variation on the circular temple theme, while Waterloo Place, Edinburgh (1815–19), demonstrates his expertise in civic design. The practice continued under his son, Archibald Junior (d. 1843), architect of the handsome Greek Revival Royal Bank of Scotland, Glasgow (1827).
