Hereward the Wake

Hereward the Wake , fl. 1070, Anglo-Saxon rebel against William I . A thane, he apparently held land in Lincolnshire. In 1070 he sacked Peterborough with the aid of a Danish fleet and then consolidated his forces on the Isle of Ely. After William captured (1071) the island, Hereward seems to have continued resistance as an outlaw. It is said that he was later pardoned by William. He became a folk hero to the conquered Anglo-Saxons.

Hereward the Wake (11th century) Semi-legendary Anglo-Saxon rebel leader. Although little is known of Hereward's life beyond what can be found in literary accounts of dubious reliability, he is remembered as a leader of Anglo-Saxon resistance to William I's new Norman regime, and was apparently responsible for an uprising centred on the Isle of Ely in 1070.

Hereward the Wake (11th century), semi-legendary Anglo-Saxon rebel leader. A leader of Anglo-Saxon resistance to William I's new Norman regime, he is thought to have been responsible for an uprising centred on the Isle of Ely in 1070. The Wake apparently means ‘the watchful one’.
