Herbert Levi Osgood

The Columbia Encyclopedia, Sixth Edition
Herbert Levi Osgood 1855-1918, American historian, b. Canton, Maine. He taught at Worcester Academy (1877-79) and Brooklyn High School (1883-89). From 1890 to 1896 he was adjunct professor and, after 1896, professor of history at Columbia. A recognized authority on American colonial history, he wrote The American Colonies in the Seventeenth Century (3 vol., 1904-7) and The American Colonies in the Eighteenth Century (4 vol., 1924), which deal mainly with the origin and development of English-American political institutions.
